Step into the Christmas Story: Living Nativity & Cribs

One of the most sought after traditions in Gozo circles around the Nativity story.

The main annual highlight is Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem. This isn’t just another display of the Nativity scene, it’s a living, breathing village that transports you 2,000 years back to Judea. The Nativity scene is spread over 20,000 square meters and one would find over 150 actors and live animals. It’s a truly mesmerising experience for all ages. The 16th edition opens on 14th December and runs until the first week of January.

Complementing this are the island’s exquisite Christmas cribs, or as the locals refer to them ‘presepji’. Gozo is renowned for its master crib makers, and this year, you can explore a total of 37 different crib displays across the island. From static and mechanical wonders to artistic depictions, these wonderful creations blend Maltese craftsmanship with the island’s deep religious devotion. Make sure to not miss the large mechanical crib at the Cultural Centre in Victoria or the unique “Gozitan crib with a difference” at Teatru Astra, featuring figures of popular local personalities.
