Malta is like one big coast. Its relief and geography makes for the most beautiful scenery. A beautiful and romantic activity you can do to abuse of this is taking night time drives. We’ve previously given you 5 places in Northern Malta to visit at night. If you wish to explore the central and South parts of the island, here are the 5 more best places for a late night drive in Malta.
It’s important to stress that while we recommend taking a car, this is not necessary. With a few snacks, a picnic blanket and some company, you can easily make an evening of it. In Malta, Bolt is the predominant form of transportation. Luckily, they are willing to take you practically anywhere, from cliffs to valleys. So you don’t have to worry about being stranded.
Ġnejna, Mġarr
Start your late night drive in Western Malta. If you make your way to Mgarr, reach the church and then go around and behind it, and keep driving straight on, you’ll find yourself going down a steep road. This will take you through some fields and eventually to a parking lot with kiosks separating it from the sand.
There are several sister-beaches on this side of the island. Ġnejna is one of them and a beautiful spot to drive to and just enjoy the night-breeze. You can also drive further into the bay beyond the parking. This area is popular so it may be crowded, but at night it’s usually very chill.
Dingli Cliffs
One of the most peaceful places on the list is Dingli Cliffs. They cover a considerable area of this side of the coast. To get there you just need to drive to Rabat, then Dingli. Keep on going straight till you leave the town’s houses behind you and you enter an area with fields.
Although you could say this for most of these places, most people who come to Dingli Cliffs are there for some peace and quiet. It’s always guaranteed that you will find a spot to yourself. You may find yourself a few meters away from a group of people. But with the ambience around, nothing can really and truly bother you.
Wied iż-Żurrieq
Wied iż-Żurrieq is almost sibling to the previously mentioned cliffs, but it has its own atmosphere. Its beautiful tower with the salty air and the smells of the nearby restaurants, accompanied by the festun (decorative lights), gives it this great Mediterranean feel.
To get there you just need to drive to Żurrieq and then take Wied iż-Żurrieq Road that takes you to this lovely spot. A few minutes’ drive away you can also visit the mystic area of Ħaġar Qim.
Pretty Bay, Birzebbuġia
To be clear, Pretty Bay is a great place if you want to have a local taste of that quiet lifestyle of the south. The only complaint that people tend to have is the port in front of Birzebbuġia. But if we’re honest, especially at night, it helps create a shimmering atmosphere of its own.
If you’re coming from the center of the country, you keep driving past Luqa Airport and head straight on. Eventually you’ll enter Birzebbuġia, and in a few turns you’ll find Pretty Bay. Again, it is worth mentioning that it is one of these places where the locals are almost hypnotized by the beach and you’ll often find them chilling there at night, enjoying the sea-breeze.
St. Thomas Beach, Marsascala
Speaking of such a place, a few minutes drive away from Pretty Bay, is the beautiful little spot of St. Thomas Beach. Admittedly you can stumble on busy nights in the area as it is a popular spot especially for locals. Then again, when I say busy I’m comparing it to these other previously mentioned places, but in reality, again, it really has a character of its own.
Here there’s a couple of places to get some good food and if you want to be in a more silent area you can walk along the beach further towards Munxar Beach, where it tends to be a bit quieter.
