With its long, green landscapes, rugged coastlines and authentic charm, this little 67 square kilometers of land captures the real essence of the Maltese islands. Furthermore, it is not the first time that it is described as a paradise for trekking enthusiasts. Between hidden beaches, stunning limestone formations, and panoramic views, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Getting to Gozo from Valletta

Fast Ferry making its way to Gozo island

There are several ways in which you can reach Gozo. All of which include getting on a boat. In this specific article, we will look at one of them: the fast ferry. This is considered to be one of the best ways for tourists to reach this island. Especially since it departs from Malta’s capital city, Valletta. The fast ferry terminal is easily reachable by bus using bus 133.

One main tip that we could share is that you book a return ticket online for €12. This is available up to an hour before departure. The return ticket is only available through the fast ferry website. It will give you a discount when compared to buying a €7.50 ticket each way from the terminal itself. The trip is not very long, and within 45 minutes you will arrive at the beautiful island of Gozo. One thing that is important for you to keep in mind is that the ferry does not allow cars on board. If you’re planning to explore Gozo by vehicle it might be wise for you to rent a car upon your arrival in Gozo.

A circular trek through some of Gozo’s most scenic spots

In this guide, we introduce a spectacular trekking route. It takes you from a natural rock window by the sea to a secluded beach. Past centuries-old salt pans, and up to a historic lighthouse. Constantly shifting between countryside and seaside views.

Our Starting Point: Wied il-Mielaħ – A Window Carved in Stone

Walking to the window carved in stone at Wied il-Mielaħ

The trek begins at Wied il-Mielaħ, a stunning limestone arch on Gozo’s northwest coast. Following the collapsing of the Azure Window, this spot started slowly growing in popularity among visitors of the island. To reach Wied il-Mielaħ, you have several options. A taxi or rental car will get you there in about 30 minutes. You can leave a rental car parked in Triq ta’ Wied il-Mielaħ. Then, head down to immerse yourself in the beauty of this natural window before you start your trek. If you are reaching this spot via public transport it is good to note that buses typically stop near Ta’ Pinu Church. This requires an additional 40-minute walk to the trek’s starting point.

Stop 1: Wied il-Għasri – A Hidden Beach

Visiting the hidden beach of Wied il-Għasri

From Wied il-Mielaħ, you can then take the coast-side trek that leads you to Wied il-Għasri. This is a stunning inlet where the sea carves a narrow passage into the land, ending in a stunning pebbly beach. Along the way, you can see a number of other fun spots such as the big cave known as Għar tal-Qrewis. You can also walk through the sand waves that have been sculpted by the elements over time.

Admiring the sand waves

In summer, the secluded Wied il-Għasri beach is considered to be the perfect spot for a refreshing swim. It is popular among snorkelers and those seeking a tranquil escape from the crowds. Hint: when you get there, close your eyes, and listen as the waves gently caress the pebbles up and down the shoreline.

Quick tip: If you would like to add in an extra stop to your walk, you can take a short detour to Gozo’s salt pans. Here locals have been harvesting sea salt for centuries. Enjoy the sight of these unique geometric formations and see some of the island’s historic cart ruts. These are believed to date back to prehistoric times.

Stop 2: Il-Fanal tal-Ġordan and the Nearby Historic Barracks

Visiting il-Fanal tal-Ġordan and the historic barracks

After exploring Wied il-Għasri or your quick detour to the salt pans, retrace your steps partway before heading inland toward Fanal tal-Ġordan, Gozo’s iconic lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in the 19th century. It took the place of a previous lighthouse which was set to exist in the 17th century. Furthermore, it was financed by the Knight Fra Henry de Gourdan. The lighthouse stands at the top of one of the island’s highest point. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the countryside and coastline. Nearby, you can also explore the remains of old military barracks, adding another historical touch to your trek.

The Return to Wied il-Mielaħ

From the lighthouse, follow the trail back toward Wied il-Mielaħ. Whether it’s returning the same exact way you came from, or going around in a circular route. If you take the circular route, make sure to stop by at the little Chapel of Saint Demetrius. Originally built in the 15th century, the chapel is known as one of myth and legend.
