Short Weekend Break in Malta? 5 Things You Can’t Miss

Share with friends

You are cruising the internet and looking for some good airline deals when suddenly you see there’s a flight to Malta for a great price. You just want a little break from it all; a little trip for the weekend and back to work by Monday or Tuesday. Malta’s the perfect secret getaway. Trust us and we’ll tell you why.

There are plenty of things to see in Malta and you’d probably need some more time if you really want a proper experience. Nonetheless, curated well, your itinerary can hit the best of what the island can offer. Its miniscule size and typically amazing weather can guarantee a splendid time for all.

Go Swimming at one of Malta’s beaches

With the exception of the months in the dead of winter, the temperature of the sea in Malta tends to be good enough for a swim throughout the year. Few other destinations in Europe allow you to experience summer and beach holidays year round. On a short romantic or self-searching holiday, what better to do than a quick dip in the sea?

Naturally, it is always advisable to check the weather and the prevailing winds whenever you’re on the islands. Always be cautious, especially around the winter season when there aren’t lifeguards on the beaches as the swimming season is not officially open yet.

Our personal recommendation for a beach that you just can’t miss is Golden Bay. We’ll let the name speak for itself.

Visit the Temples

If you go to Egypt and you miss the pyramids, it can still be an enjoyable holiday. Then again, you probably wouldn’t even notice you’d been to Egypt.

The megalithic temples in Malta are the equivalent of that. What’s more, they’re more than a thousand years older than the pyramids. For being around 5000 years old they’re unbelievably pretty intact!

As great as they all are, we would recommend checking out Ħaġar Qim and Ġgantija. The latter is in Gozo so in that case, we’d recommend another list for a Gozitan weekend on another day.

A Weekend Night in Valletta

Visiting the capital is a must, but this is just how I would do it. I’d go to Sliema, take a ferry and enter Valletta from the side, after enjoying the short sea trip. Then, I’d walk and walk around the hilly grid that is Malta’s capital, check out some of the gardens such as Upper Barrakka, and enjoy the view of the harbor.

Finish off by finding a restaurant—which shouldn’t be so hard to do—and enjoy a dinner with the Mediterranean atmosphere curating your night.

Visit the Ghost Town, Mdina

One of the holy grails on the island is also the old city of Mdina. Even the road leading to it from Attard to Rabat is a treat in itself before coming up to the beautiful fort walls. Mdina is one of those places I’ve been to countless times as I used to live very close to it. Yet, in the morning, at night, in the rain or a sunny Maltese day, it’s just one of those places that gives you a unique experience, in whatever circumstance.

Once you’re there, having something to eat whilst looking over the beautiful scenery from this centrally-located piece of history is a must. A glass of wine is recommended as well. For this you can stop at Fontanella which is the restaurant on top of the fortifications, at the other side of the city, if you’re approaching it from the main gate.

A Weekend in the South of Malta

In my opinion, here is where you can get a raw authentic Mediterranean taste of Malta. If you are here for a weekend and it happens to be Sunday, you can open your day by visiting the Marsaxlokk market. Here you can also have some breakfast from the many shops, kiosks and eating places in the area. There’s just a certain joviality that you can’t miss.

You could also go to St. Peter’s pool to enjoy a relaxing swim in this hidden gem of a beach in the southern coast. Maybe even give Ghar Dalam a visit.

We know, visiting opposite ends of the country in just a weekend seems hardly possible. Luckily, Malta’s size and the abundance and convenience of Bolt cabs makes this as easy as going for a simple drive. You can, for example, reach Golden Bay from Valletta in just 30 minutes without ever having to buy a ticket. Bolt to the rescue!
