Religious Sites and Churches in Gozo

LoveMalta Team

Gozo is known by most for its beautiful landscapes and Mediterranean waters. But for those looking to connect with spirituality and religion, travelling to the island also offers visitors unique pilgrimage experiences of churches, chapels and religious sites in Gozo.

Ferry Ride to Gozo

Visitors’ spiritual experiences can begin with the scenic ferry ride from Cirkewwa in Malta to Mgarr Harbor in Gozo. The journey offers a moment of reflection, taking in the Mediterranean coastline and views foreshadowing the spiritual sites that await.

Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel

The first spiritual encounter that travelers perceive is the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel. Located on a hill that overlooks the harbor, the Gothic-style limestone chapel is a beautiful sight of Marian devotion. The chapel was built in 1893, after Bishop Pietro Pace blessed the statue of the Virgin Mary of Lourdes that stood there since 1879. This sacred site offers a moment of serene reflection. It also serves as a vantage point for the panoramic views of the harbor, and the Mediterranean Sea. You can observe the Island of Malta, Gozo’s sister island, in the horizon.

Chapel of San Dmitri

In the western village of Gharb, visitors will encounter the chapel of San Dmitri. Full of myth and legend it is located right by the Ras San Mitri cliff. The chapel was built in the 15th century, and gets its name from the art piece that stands above the altar. The painting depicts San Dmitri on his horse, an old woman and an enchained young man.

The local legend tells a story of a son that was kidnapped by Barbarians from a woman named Zgugina. In desperation, she ran to the chapel and prayed to San Dmitri who heard her calls for help. San Dmitri came alive from the painting, chased after the kidnappers and brought Zgugina’s son back to her. Since then, the chapel has served as a sanctuary for those in desperate need of help. According to legend Zgugina’s light that she lit up to thank San Dmitri lives on in the Mediterranean sea.

Rotunda of St. John the Baptist

The biggest church in Gozo is the Rotunda of St. John the Baptist, located in Xewkija (also known as the Xewkija Rotunda). The church which is built in white local limestone. It stands at 75 meters high and is decorated in modern paintings, as well as traditional architecture. The rotunda, which is an unsupported dome, is an architectural masterpiece, and a testament to the islanders’ religious dedication and craftsmanship. Visitors are also able to climb to the top of the dome to take in a scenic view of Gozo.

Ghammar Hill

While Gozo is a small island, its scope should not be underestimated. There are many different ways of experiencing the island. For instance, taking a religious journey across the island can be combined with a spiritual hike in the beautiful Gozitan nature. Thus, for those visitors seeking a retreat within nature, and a reconnection with spirituality, Ghammar Hill, located by Ta’ Pinu is a must. The Hill trails 14 white marble statues of the Stations of the Cross, leading to a small chapel at the top. The walk, which is both a physical and spiritual journey, offers beautiful views of Gozo and the surrounding sea.

Ta’ Pinu Basilica

Perhaps Gozo’s most iconic landmark is the Ta’ Pinu Basilica. Located by Gharb, the Shrine of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu has stood there since the 16th century. Due to lack of maintenance, the shrine was meant to be demolished in 1575. However various divine signs had encouraged the locals to preserve it. In 1883 a woman reported hearing the voice of the Virgin Mary, leading to her miraculous recovery. Since then, various clergy members have confirmed the divine origin of these events. As the church has been reconstructed since, it serves today, as a beautiful and panoramic place for prayer and reflection.

The mentioned sites are only a couple of examples of Gozo’s religious soul. There are countless other ways to discover and immerse oneself in. For instance, L’Ghajn tal-Hasselin is a hidden gem of Gozo. It consists an ancient spring, believed to have healing properties, and a small chapel dedicated to the assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is thus truly important that visitors are able to take their time and fully submerge themselves into the spiritual heritage and experience of Gozo’s charm.
